How to Write a Best Man Speech (Structure That Actually Works)

The 6-part structure

1) The hook: one line that earns attention — affectionate, confident, never an apology about being bad at speeches. 2) Who you are: one sentence, your name and your claim to the microphone. 3) Two stories: the heart of the speech (see below). 4) The shift: what changed when the groom met his partner — this is the emotional center. 5) Direct address: two or three sentences spoken to the couple, not about them. 6) The toast: short, clean, glass up.

Notice what's not in the structure: a chronological biography, a list of adjectives, twelve inside jokes, or anything about exes. If it doesn't fit one of the six parts, it goes.

Pick stories that SHOW character

The test for a story is simple: does it prove something about who the groom is, without you having to say it? 'He's loyal' is a claim. 'He drove four hours at 2am in his pajamas to rescue me, and never mentioned it again' is evidence. Rooms believe evidence.

Two stories is the sweet spot. One funny-ish, one warm, both TRUE and both with concrete details — the time of night, the burnt pancakes, the exact words. Details are what separate a speech people remember from a speech people survive.

Humor: the grandmother rule

Affectionate beats savage, every time. The filter: would you say it with his grandmother in the second row? Then it stays. Exes, stag night details, humiliating failures — out. The best man who roasts hardest is remembered as the speech that made the room tense.

Length and delivery

Four to five minutes — 550 to 720 spoken words at a natural pace. Under two feels dismissive; over seven, you're losing the room no matter how good it is. Memorize your first and last sentence, read the middle if you need to, pause after laughs, and only raise your glass at the very end.
