Good evening, everyone. I'm Michael — James's older brother, which means I've had the longest possible run-up to this speech, and I still couldn't fit him into five minutes.

Let me tell you who my brother is, because a room this full of people who love him deserves the real version.

Three years ago my car gave up outside Leeds at two in the morning. I rang James expecting advice. What I got, four hours later, was my little brother standing on the hard shoulder in his pajamas, holding two cups of petrol-station coffee. He drove me home, told one joke about my taste in cars, and never mentioned it again. Not once. That's the thing about James — most people keep receipts for their good deeds. He doesn't even keep the memory.

At university, while the rest of us were perfecting the art of sleeping until noon, James noticed that some of the first-years spent Sundays alone, missing home. So he started a breakfast club. Every Sunday, for three years, he made them pancakes. I have eaten those pancakes. They were, and I say this with love, terrible. Burnt at the edges, raw in the middle. And every Sunday that kitchen was full — because nobody was there for the pancakes.

Sarah, you call him the human golden retriever, and honestly there's no better description ever been given of my brother. Endless loyalty. Boundless enthusiasm. Physically incapable of letting anyone sit alone in a room.

But here's what I've watched since he met you, Sarah: the retriever finally found the person he'd run to first. James has always been the first to show up and the last to leave — for everyone. You're the one he shows up for before anyone even calls. I've known him his whole life, and I have never seen him as certain of anything as he is of you.

So let me do the one thing my brother would never do himself: keep the credit where it belongs.
