9 Wedding Speech Mistakes That Lose the Room (and Their Fixes)

Most bad wedding speeches aren't bad because the speaker lacks talent. They're bad because of the same nine avoidable mistakes, in every country, at every wedding, forever. Here they are, with fixes.

Mistakes 1–5: the openers and the material

1. The apology opener ('I'm not good at speeches…') — you've just told the room to lower expectations. Fix: open with a story or a confident affectionate line. 2. The dictionary definition ('Webster's defines love as…') — retired, permanently. 3. The chronological biography — nobody needs the timeline; pick two moments that prove character. 4. The inside-joke spiral — if it needs context, it needs cutting. 5. The roast that draws blood — the grandmother rule: if you wouldn't say it in front of his grandmother, don't.

Mistakes 6–9: the delivery

6. Winging it — confidence on the sofa evaporates at the microphone; write it out, practice aloud twice. 7. The marathon — past seven minutes even good material dies; 550-720 words is the professional range. 8. Drinking courage — one glass, not four; slurred sincerity reads as neither. 9. Rushing the toast — the final line is the whole point: slow down, look at the couple, raise the glass LAST, not while talking.

Avoid all nine and you're ahead of 80% of wedding speeches. Want the other 20% handled too? We write the whole kit — three versions, delivery notes, backup — from your stories.
